About Judy

MA Dip Int Psych UKCP

Hinterland

Judy was working as a staff nurse in a coronary care unit when she had her "A-ha" moment – she noticed how the heart beat and rhythm of a patient in a coma improved as she held his hand and talked to him. This simple yet profound event led to Judy’s lifelong enquiry into the link between body and mind.

Over time, Judy worked in operating theatres, as a community nurse and Marie Curie nurse, then training in Occupational Health. Working both in NHS and Corporate settings, Judy witnessed, at first hand, how simple human contact can transform potentially traumatic events into manageable experiences.

During these years, Judy was developing her interest in a wholistic approach to health and well-being. She studied homeopathy and massage, before undertaking her first counselling studies with Westminster Pastoral Foundation; then training as a Relate counsellor. Studies in Craniosacral therapy followed. Her own therapy drew Judy into a need to deepen her knowledge of the art of listening, so she undertook Integrative Psychotherapy training at the Minster Centre in London, being one of their first MA students to graduate in 1998.

Independent Practitioner

Judy set up as an independent practitioner in 1996, and ran Rubicon, a complementary health centre for many years in the Medway Towns; witnessing the emotional release that can be associated with massage and Craniosacral therapy, and how health and well being improves when feelings are addressed, and pain noticed and eased, which is where the talking therapies are of such use.

personal Experience

Judy’s personal experiences seem relevant, as she has made full recovery from two life threatening events; cancer and firstly septicaemia, an acute life-threatening illness. The poor treatment Judy received during this acute illness contributed to her developing PTSD. Her experience of neglectful care, unmanageable pain and the visceral and isolating terror she felt as her life hung in the balance whilst in hospital, made Judy determined to transform these experiences and have something positive and creative to come from such suffering. Psychotherapy, Craniosacral therapy and the good support of friends and family helped Judy through to a complete recovery. She understands that healing can take time and patience, and has the willingness and ability to be there for others on the long road to recovery.

Therapies & Services

Depression, Anxiety & Trauma Recovery

Judy has worked extensively with people suffering from anxiety, shock, depression and trauma, including people involved in Hillsborough, the Clapham Common train crash and families of murder victims.

Current research into neurobiology and brain imaging confirms teachings that anxiety and depression are often linked to traumatic events, sometimes events that are early in childhood before language has developed, beyond recall; but still felt in the body’s central nervous system.

Listening, really attentive listening, to what is spoken and what is felt, can help ease old patterns of thinking and feeling, and set up new, more effective neural pathways to relieve old ways of responding to life events, and develop new, more effective ways of responding to life’s experiences.

Training & Workshops

Judy has extensive experience of teaching and running workshops. She has run:

  • Somatic focusing workshops
  • Trauma Training workshops
  • Counselling Skills training
  • Stress management for local authority and private sector companies.

Craniosacral Therapy

Judy is fully-qualified Craniosacral therapist and a registered member of the Craniosacral Therapy Association of the United Kingdom.

Supervision Conference, Birmingham UK
7th April 2018

Chaos or Harmony, where's the Balance? A live streamed supervision session with Judy Hemmons

The wisdom that comes from maturity is recognised as a disciplined refusal to choose between or isolate three powerful dynamics that form human identity: what has happened, what is happening now and what is about to occur - Whyte D (2016 p139)

This passage defines my ongoing fascination with the relational approach to supervision. Implicit in the role of supervisor is the notion of maturity. In our supervisory role we have sufficient experience of our past, our present and a future, to hold a space for our supervisees; for them to reflect on their practice and how their understanding and experience of their own theoretical underpinnings impact and inform their relationships, with clients, organisations, lovers, friends and families.

In this workshop I plan carry out a live supervision session, stream it on to a large screen and run it live in conjunction with Online Events. There will be a Facebook feed, so people can comment on and question the session as it happens; I will then facilitate a discussion, so people can critique and explore the session and their own responses and thoughts.

We will then run another Online Events session (date will be confirmed on the day) a few weeks later, and invite people who were in the room and people who watched the workshop online, to share their experiences.

I am interested in the 'what has happened, what is happening now and what is about to occur'; in both everyday supervision and as reflexive research and how and if watching a supervision session live, or live but mediated through a screen, or reviewing the event through a recording, changes the experience.

Directions to The Watershed

Rockness Hill is a single-track road. Many people find it easier to park in Horsley Road and walk up the footpath, which ends at my gate (if you look me up on your sat nav, you will see I 'float' between Rockness Hill and Horsley Rd).

There is a regular bus service from Stroud; if coming by rail, ask at the station for the nearest bus stop for Nailsworth. You need to alight at the ‘Bus Station ‘in Nailsworth - most buses from Stroud terminate here.

Walking from Nailsworth Bus Station (about a 5 minute walk)

With the river behind you, turn left into Old Market Street and walk past the arcade of shops and the Oldstone Restaurant on your left towards the Britannia Pub. The road forks at the Britannia, keep the pub to your right and bear left into Horsley Road and walk up the hill bearing left again as the road forks (ignore Pike Lane) you're still on Horsley Road.

Take the second footpath on your right, just past the high stone wall with a blue house behind it. If you see a chalet bungalow and a beautifully maintained veggie garden above you on your right, you've missed the footpath!

At the top of the footpath you'll see my wooden gate, go through the gate and you'll see my consulting room with a blue stable door.

From Horsley direction (B4058) Via Rockness Hill

Coming out of Horsley village, the road drops down into a valley and up the other side. As you go up and round a left hand bend, start indicating and turn left into Rockness Hill. You'll see a sign post to Rockness and a 40mile sign on your right.

The very narrow road climbs, then plateaus out. After @ ½ mile you'll pass a 'new build' larch clad ecohouse on your left, then a huge Leylandi hedge, after which you'll see a terrace of cottages with long front gardens. Park on your right opposite these cottages.

Keeping the valley on your right, walk down the track. My wooden gate is on your right just where the track ends and the footpath begins. Through the gate, you'll see my consulting room with a blue stable door.

If you are still driving and go past Walkers Cottage a yellow painted detached house on your right, you have gone too far! Turn in the gateway opposite and retrace your steps.

From Bath Rd direction (A46)

...or from Horsley direction if you choose to take the easy road! (Turn left when you get to the T-junction past the Town Hall and follow directions from William’s Deli below)

Come down the steep hill into Nailsworth. At the roundabout at the bottom of town (William’s Delicatessen on your left), turn first left into Spring Hill and first left into Old Market Street.

Follow Old Market St to the end of the shops and take the left hand fork into Horsley Road (the Britannia pub on your right).

A couple of hundred yards up Horsley Road you’ll see the road bends round into Pike Lane, keep left (you're still on Horsley Road). 100 yards down the road you'll see a tall stone wall to your right.

Park anywhere near there and take the footpath up to your right. You'll see a chalet bungalow with a fab vegetable garden behind a beech hedge to your left as you walk up the footpath (and a blue painted house behind you …and the high stone wall).

At the top of the path you will see my wooden gate to your left as the footpath ends and the track begins. Through the gate, you'll see my consulting room with a blue stable door.

When you leave, it's best to do a three-point turn and go back through Nailsworth, as there's a blind junction at the end of Horsley Road.

From Stroud direction (A46)

At the roundabout in Nailsworth take the third exit into Spring Hill and first left into Old Market Street.

When you leave, it's best to do a three point turn and go back through Nailsworth, as there's a blind junction at the end of Horsley Road.

From Cirencester

Turn left at Tom Long's Post and go down 'the Ladder' into Nailsworth. Take the second exit into Spring Hill and first left into Old Market Street.

Follow Old Market Street to the end of the shops and take the left hand fork into Horsley Road (the Britannia pub on your right).

A couple of hundred yards up Horsley Road you'll see the road bends round into Pike Lane, keep left (you're still on Horsley Road). 100 yards down the road you'll see a tall stone wall to your right.

Park anywhere near there and take the footpath up to your right. You'll see a chalet bungalow with a fab vegetable garden behind a beech hedge to your left as you walk up the footpath (and a blue painted house behind you and the high stone wall).
